Recent Litigation News:

Hieber, Skaer, Van Noy and Christenson v the Spokane County Club is an action brought by Mary Schultz on behalf of four women regular members (stockholders) of the Spokane Country Club. The Club imposes gender based policies of golf course and facility access on its membership. It provides male members numerous quality events and course access. The Club charges its women members the very same fees, but excludes them from the Club's signature events, and provides lesser course and facilities access. The case was just accepted for interlocutory review in the Division III Appellate Court at the Plaintiffs' request. The issue to be determined is whether the gender policies at this golf club are per se illegal. The Country Club has already been determined to be a "public accomodation" by the trial court--not a private club--and it is thus subject to Washington's law against discrimination. The only remaining question is whether the plaintiffs are entitled to judgment and injunctive relief without the need for trial.
